The resume is the first step. Do it right.

• This is a great, free resource on what should go onto your resume. It has links to other resources. It is from Techtonica.org, which is a non-profit that takes people from generally underrepresented groups in tech, provides living stipends, teaches them to code, and helps place them into job.
